WEBVTT

00:00.280 --> 00:01.920
My name is Avi Yoresh.

00:01.920 --> 00:05.240
I'm a senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, which is based here in Washington,

00:05.240 --> 00:06.240
D.C.

00:06.240 --> 00:10.780
And I recently authored a book called, Thou Shalt Innovate, How Israeli Ingenuity Repairs

00:10.780 --> 00:16.480
the World, which features 15 innovations that have gone global, 15 Israeli innovations that

00:16.480 --> 00:21.240
have gone global and positively influenced the lives of billions of people around the

00:21.240 --> 00:23.360
world.

00:23.360 --> 00:32.080
What's the inspiration behind this innovative power of the Jewish minds?

00:32.080 --> 00:37.400
I normally attribute it to a number of different items, but primarily we've had a prophetic

00:37.400 --> 00:40.720
tradition over the course of 3,000 years.

00:40.720 --> 00:45.960
Our prophets have been telling us for about 3,000 years, be a light onto the nations.

00:45.960 --> 00:51.260
Everything in Jewish history and in Jewish culture, our prophets primarily have been telling

00:51.260 --> 00:54.520
us to take the mundane and turn it holy.

00:54.520 --> 00:59.480
For example, on Saturday nights, when we separate between the Sabbath and the rest of the week,

00:59.480 --> 01:01.020
we make special blessings.

01:01.020 --> 01:02.820
When we eat, we make special blessings.

01:02.820 --> 01:05.520
When we go to the bathroom, we make special blessings.

01:05.520 --> 01:10.820
Everything in our lives in Judaism revolves around taking something very ordinary and elevating

01:10.820 --> 01:11.820
it.

01:11.820 --> 01:14.780
Now Jews as a whole, we're not a nation of saints, but we do believe that the purpose

01:14.780 --> 01:18.920
in life is to take something ordinary and elevate it.

01:18.920 --> 01:22.940
And this is baked in to the cultural DNA of the state of Israel.

01:22.940 --> 01:27.180
When Ben-Gurion declared the state of Israel 70 years ago, he did two things.

01:27.180 --> 01:31.680
One, he encouraged all Jews to come back to the state of Israel and participate in this

01:31.680 --> 01:33.300
modern day miracle.

01:33.300 --> 01:38.220
And the other, he declared, he said, he baked in a messianic principle.

01:38.220 --> 01:44.500
And he said, Israel has the responsibility and the privilege to tackle some of the world's

01:44.500 --> 01:47.680
greatest challenges in the 20th century.

01:47.680 --> 01:50.780
In the United States and other parts of the world, Jews have come to believe that this

01:50.780 --> 01:55.640
concept is known as tikkun olam, or making the world a better place.

01:55.640 --> 02:00.120
And in Israel, primarily, this idea of tikkun olam, this idea of making the world a better

02:00.120 --> 02:04.280
place, has been manifested through technology.

02:04.280 --> 02:11.040
If one person can walk, perhaps all of us can solve the idea of not having to be in a wheelchair.

02:11.040 --> 02:16.140
If we can grow vegetables and one person can eat, perhaps we can solve world hunger.

02:16.140 --> 02:21.560
And in Israel, this technology is helping improve the lives of billions of people when it comes

02:21.560 --> 02:27.640
to science, when it comes to medicine, when it comes to applications, when it comes to

02:27.640 --> 02:31.140
saving lives, when it comes to technology.

02:31.140 --> 02:35.640
All of these ways in which Israeli technology innovation is leveraged around the world.

02:35.640 --> 02:40.900
When it comes to water, when it comes to birds, when it comes to medicine, Israeli technology

02:40.900 --> 02:45.640
is being used around the world to improve the lives of billions of people.

02:45.640 --> 02:50.140
And I think your viewers, especially in Turkey, are going to be certainly aware of the fact

02:50.140 --> 02:57.400
that in Turkey, we're experiencing in the last few years, massive, massive water crisis.

02:57.400 --> 03:00.480
In large part because of drought, but also because of climate change.

03:00.480 --> 03:05.460
And as we prognosticate and as we look forward over the course of the next 5, 10, 15, 20 years,

03:05.460 --> 03:08.840
we're seeing massive water crises around the world.

03:08.840 --> 03:13.920
But for your viewers in Turkey, Israel has completely solved its water crisis.

03:13.920 --> 03:19.640
In 2013, it declared water independence from the water, from its neighbors, and from the

03:19.640 --> 03:20.640
weather.

03:20.640 --> 03:22.300
And it did this primarily through a few means.

03:22.300 --> 03:24.760
One, it uses drip irrigation.

03:24.760 --> 03:28.760
Drip irrigation is a small plastic tube which drips water.

03:28.760 --> 03:30.760
It's used by farmers around the world.

03:30.760 --> 03:34.420
Over a billion people around the world use this irrigation system.

03:34.420 --> 03:38.040
It uses a third less water and it doubles the yield.

03:38.040 --> 03:39.680
So that's one way.

03:39.680 --> 03:42.920
Secondly, Israel recycles all of its water.

03:42.920 --> 03:49.200
When you go to the bathroom and you flush the toilet, Israel removes the waste and then

03:49.200 --> 03:54.300
recycles 90% of its water and then it uses it in the irrigation system.

03:54.300 --> 04:01.220
The second country down uses about somewhere 12, 13, 14% and in the United States we only

04:01.220 --> 04:03.020
recycle 8% of the water.

04:03.020 --> 04:06.860
There's a big difference between 90% and 8%.

04:06.860 --> 04:08.980
Or take, for example, desalination.

04:08.980 --> 04:17.140
Israel has six desalination plants which are used by the population to drink water.

04:17.140 --> 04:21.240
I mean, Israel has also created, has built the largest desalination plants in California,

04:21.240 --> 04:24.020
in India, and China.

04:24.020 --> 04:30.300
As a result of mastering this technology, Israel has a surplus of water, not a deficit of water.

04:30.300 --> 04:34.980
And as you look over the course of the next 5, 10, 15, 20 years, as Turkey experiences a

04:34.980 --> 04:40.060
massive water crisis, it should look to Israel to solve its water crisis.

04:40.060 --> 04:44.800
This technology can be used around the world and people should benefit from that particular

04:44.800 --> 04:47.020
knowledge and that technology.

04:47.020 --> 04:52.980
So let me start by saying that Israel's hand is outstretched in peace and it's outstretched

04:52.980 --> 04:57.660
in a desire to really help humankind through its technology.

04:57.660 --> 05:01.700
Since the Middle Ages and possibly before, we have been reciting a prayer called the Elenu

05:01.700 --> 05:02.700
prayer.

05:02.700 --> 05:06.160
Three times a day, we're instructed to repair the world.

05:06.160 --> 05:10.740
We believe we're partners with God in spreading morality and social justice.

05:10.740 --> 05:15.900
In the Mishnah, our classic rabbinic code since the second century AD, we're told no less

05:15.900 --> 05:21.420
than 10 times that we have to repair the world for the sake of those who are less advantage

05:21.420 --> 05:22.480
than we are.

05:22.480 --> 05:26.180
The prophet Isaiah calls on all of us to be a light onto the nations.

05:26.180 --> 05:32.460
And as you look at this DNA, Israel is acting as a light onto the nations.

05:32.460 --> 05:36.660
It is using its technology and improving the lives of billions of people.

05:36.660 --> 05:43.540
Take for example, in recent years Israel created the two most used drugs around the world for

05:43.540 --> 05:46.540
multiple sclerosis.

05:46.540 --> 05:51.540
There are 2.5 million people around the world who experience multiple sclerosis and two of

05:51.540 --> 05:57.540
the top drugs treat over a million people.

05:57.540 --> 06:02.040
Almost 50% of these people are using drugs that are coming from Israel.

06:02.040 --> 06:08.540
Or take for example, in Turkey, there are 1.2 million traffic accidents a year.

06:08.540 --> 06:15.540
About 20%, about 200,000 people either die or are injured as a result of these particular

06:15.540 --> 06:16.540
traffic accidents.

06:16.540 --> 06:21.540
About 10 years ago, Israel created an unbelievable application.

06:21.540 --> 06:27.540
First of all, they trained a massive number of emergency responders, EMT, to get to the scene

06:27.540 --> 06:29.540
of a crisis as quickly as possible.

06:29.540 --> 06:32.540
In order to get there, they have an application on their phone.

06:32.540 --> 06:38.540
The five nearest people to the scene of an emergency get an alert to get there as quickly

06:38.540 --> 06:39.540
as possible.

06:39.540 --> 06:45.540
And to get there, they use a, not an ambulance, an ambulance generally in Israel and in the

06:45.540 --> 06:49.540
United States, and I suspect around the world, it takes about 20 minutes to get to the scene

06:49.540 --> 06:50.540
of an emergency.

06:50.540 --> 06:56.540
But there are, in Israel, the average is three minutes, not for an ambulance, but for an

06:56.540 --> 06:57.540
emergency responder to get there.

06:57.540 --> 06:59.540
It's three minutes.

06:59.540 --> 07:03.540
And in cities, major cities, it's 90 seconds.

07:03.540 --> 07:06.540
The number of lives that are saved is a very, very short amount of time.

07:06.540 --> 07:11.540
This is not meant to replace ambulances, but to get there, they use a half ambulance,

07:11.540 --> 07:12.540
half motorcycle.

07:12.540 --> 07:16.540
So you have emergency responders everywhere in Israel.

07:16.540 --> 07:19.540
They use an application on their phone in order to get alerted.

07:19.540 --> 07:24.540
And to get there, they use a half ambulance, half motorcycle called an ambu-cycle to get

07:24.540 --> 07:26.540
there extraordinarily quickly.

07:26.540 --> 07:31.540
Millions of people every single year, their lives are saved as a result of this particular

07:31.540 --> 07:32.540
technology.

07:32.540 --> 07:38.540
If I were to experience a heart attack right here, right now, generally, it depends on the

07:38.540 --> 07:42.540
level of heart attack, but you really, in order to effectively treat someone, you have

07:42.540 --> 07:44.540
about six minutes.

07:44.540 --> 07:50.540
So if an ambulance takes 20 minutes to get there, you're losing a massive number of life

07:50.540 --> 07:53.540
can be saved if you can get there in three minutes or less.

07:53.540 --> 07:57.540
And this is technology that is usable all over the world.

07:57.540 --> 08:00.540
In fact, 20 countries around the world are now using this particular technology in order

08:00.540 --> 08:02.540
to save life.

08:02.540 --> 08:04.540
Or take, for example, in Turkey.

08:04.540 --> 08:07.540
There's a massive infrastructure project that's taking place, primarily in the form of an airport

08:07.540 --> 08:12.540
on the European side of Istanbul, the European side of the continent.

08:12.540 --> 08:18.540
Unfortunately, it's blocking, or it will block when it's fully completed.

08:18.540 --> 08:21.540
It blocks birds that are migrating from Europe to Africa.

08:21.540 --> 08:27.540
Israel has about a billion birds that fly through its aerospace every single year.

08:27.540 --> 08:33.540
And as a result of one scientist who flew at the birds and mapped out their migration patterns,

08:33.540 --> 08:38.540
Israel doesn't have a problem when it comes to birds hitting planes.

08:38.540 --> 08:42.540
Unfortunately, if Turkey is not careful, it will find, when it builds this airport,

08:42.540 --> 08:46.540
with planes that are taking off or landing, it will find birds hitting it.

08:46.540 --> 08:51.540
In fact, in the United States, one bird every single day hits an airplane.

08:51.540 --> 08:56.540
And that's, in large part, why we see not a small number of airplane accidents,

08:56.540 --> 09:01.540
including in 2009 when an airplane was forced to land on the Hudson River

09:01.540 --> 09:05.540
through a very famous movie that came out because of a bird hitting a plane.

09:05.540 --> 09:06.540
Israel solved this problem.

09:06.540 --> 09:09.540
It has the ability to help other countries around the world

09:09.540 --> 09:12.540
to leverage its technology and its know-how.

09:12.540 --> 09:17.540
You cannot divert birds. Birds are not able to, you can't instruct a bird, move here or go there.

09:17.540 --> 09:20.540
We have to deal with the birds, not the birds deal with us.

09:20.540 --> 09:25.540
And so Israel has put in place loud speakers, dogs that bark, scarecrows,

09:25.540 --> 09:28.540
but primarily it's through understanding the patterns of birds,

09:28.540 --> 09:34.540
when they fly, when they do not, where they fly, and where they do not.

09:34.540 --> 09:36.540
But you have to fly with the birds.

09:36.540 --> 09:39.540
You have to understand their migration patterns in order to ensure

09:39.540 --> 09:43.540
that when there's high numbers of birds that are going in, that you avoid them.

09:43.540 --> 09:50.540
And that you have zones where planes do not fly, take off, or land as they go in or go up.

09:50.540 --> 09:53.540
Israel's hand is outstretched in peace.

09:53.540 --> 09:58.540
The State of Israel is here to take its technology and help Muslims around the world.

09:58.540 --> 10:03.540
Israeli technology is used in places like Turkey, like the Arabian Gulf.

10:03.540 --> 10:05.540
It's used throughout the world.

10:05.540 --> 10:12.540
Part of the cultural DNA of the State of Israel is to help solve some of the gravest challenges.

10:12.540 --> 10:18.540
And the State of Israel is there to help anyone which wishes to use its tech and improve their lives.

10:18.540 --> 10:21.540
Farmers around the world are leveraging this technology.

10:21.540 --> 10:23.540
Muslims are using this technology.

10:23.540 --> 10:25.540
Christians are using this technology.

10:25.540 --> 10:28.540
Israel has its hand outstretched in peace.

10:28.540 --> 10:29.540
Thank you.

10:29.540 --> 10:36.540
And I hope that you will buy, it's all featured in my book, Thou Shalt Innovate, How Israel, How Israeli Ingenuity Repairs the World.

10:36.540 --> 10:38.540
All of these examples are featured there.

10:38.540 --> 10:43.540
In fact, I feature 15 stories and 50 more.

10:43.540 --> 10:47.540
It's called, Thou Shalt Innovate, How Israeli Ingenuity Repairs the World.

10:47.540 --> 10:54.540
In this particular book you'll find 15 examples of how Israeli technology is used globally around the world

10:54.540 --> 10:56.540
to influence the lives of 15 billion people.

10:56.540 --> 10:59.540
And I feature another 15 in the back of the book.

10:59.540 --> 11:06.540
But all of these stories in the book are being used by billions of people to make the world a better place.

11:06.540 --> 11:10.540
Kristoff

11:10.540 --> 11:13.540
Thank you so much.

11:25.540 --> 11:27.540
So, yes, in these stories up here

11:27.540 --> 11:29.540
the theme of this book was 이것
