00:00.000 --> 00:06.000
İzlediğiniz için teşekkür ederim.

00:06.000 --> 00:09.000
I do hold to an old earth perspective.

00:09.000 --> 00:13.000
I do believe that the earth is as scientists say

00:13.000 --> 00:18.000
4 billion years old and that the universe is 13.8 billion years old.

00:18.000 --> 00:22.000
There is no Christian creed or confession

00:22.000 --> 00:27.000
that requires that one hold to a young earth or an old earth.

00:27.000 --> 00:31.000
And throughout the history of the church

00:31.000 --> 00:34.000
theologians have held to a variety of positions.

00:34.000 --> 00:38.000
Some theologians interpreted Genesis 1 and 2

00:38.000 --> 00:41.000
to teach that the earth is only about 6,000 years old.

00:41.000 --> 00:44.000
Others such as Saint Augustine

00:44.000 --> 00:49.000
did not understand the seven days of creation to be 24 hour days.

00:49.000 --> 00:55.000
So there is latitude within the Christian faith about the age of the earth.

00:55.000 --> 00:59.000
I think that a close reading of the Genesis text

00:59.000 --> 01:02.000
in Genesis 1, 2, and 3

01:02.000 --> 01:07.000
lend itself to a non-24 hour interpretation.

01:07.000 --> 01:09.000
There is a number of reasons for this.

01:09.000 --> 01:16.000
For one thing the word day is used three different ways in the text.

01:16.000 --> 01:22.000
And it makes it very clear that we are not to understand each day as a 24 hour day.

01:22.000 --> 01:28.000
because for each day that it speaks about, the first day, day two, day three,

01:28.000 --> 01:31.000
it would say evening and morning, day one.

01:31.000 --> 01:33.000
Evening and morning, day two.

01:33.000 --> 01:36.000
Evening and morning, day three.

01:36.000 --> 01:40.000
Well, if you think about it for a second, that's not a 24 hour period.

01:40.000 --> 01:43.000
Evening to morning isn't even the daytime.

01:43.000 --> 01:48.000
Evening and morning is talking about the evening, the night time.

01:48.000 --> 01:51.000
And it's talking about the time in which God would create,

01:51.000 --> 01:54.000
and then there would be a period of rest.

01:54.000 --> 01:58.000
And so just a close reading of the text itself indicates

01:58.000 --> 02:03.000
that one should not read Genesis 1 as teaching a literal 24 hour period.

02:03.000 --> 02:06.000
And so I'm very comfortable with an old earth perspective

02:06.000 --> 02:11.000
because I think that it not only fits what the text says,

02:11.000 --> 02:14.000
but it also fits the latest findings of science.
